Product Description

Atlanta Rack

Atlanta rack and pinion drive systems

Atlanta are the world's largest supplier of precision rack and pinion, with the largest range of high quality racks available. This is complemented by their servo gearboxes which are designed to support the resultant radial and axial forces. Atlanta racks are available in a range of materials such as; steel, stainless steel and plastic. All steel racks are available as straight tooth or helical tooth. Helical toothed rack and pinion drives have the advantage of lower noise and offer higher load capability than straight tooth. Straight toothed gears and rack have the advantage of zero axial force on the pinion.
Steel racks are classified by their Quality rating from quality 10 down to quality 4. The lower the quality number the tighter the tolerance of the the tooth thickness and the pitch of the teeth. Also in general the lower the quality number the greater the load capability for a given size of rack. The tighter tolerance or greater precision is achieved by the way in which the teeth are treated. The teeth can be induction hardened, quenched and tempered, case hardened or untreated which is classified as "soft". Following the heat treatment the greater precision is achieved by grinding to the required tolerance. Atlanta racks are classified as:

  • Basic rack (BR)
    • Induction hardened - quality 10 - low accuracy, medium load capability
    • Soft - quality 9 - medium accuracy, low load capability
  • Precision rack (PR)
    • Quenched and tempered - quality 8 - medium accuracy, low to medium load
    • Induction hardened and ground - quality 8 - medium accuracy, medium load
  • High Precision rack (HPR)
    • Induction hardened or carburized hardened and ground - quality 6 and quality 7 - high accuracy, high load
  • Ultra High Precision rack (UHPR)
    • Induction hardened or carburized hardened and ground - quality 5 and quality 4 - ultra high accuracy, high load

Exceptional Precision and Durability

Engineered to meet DIN 7 standards, Atlanta Rack delivers high precision with a backlash of less than 0.03 mm and a tolerance of 0.02 mm. Its alloy steel construction, anti-rust coating, and hardness rating of 5055 HRC assure a robust performance in challenging industrial environments. This reliability is ideal for applications demanding dependable linear motion.

Flexible Sizing and Versatile Applications

With modules ranging from 2 to 8 and lengths up to 2,000 mm, the Atlanta Rack accommodates custom sizes upon request. It is suitable for industrial automation, machine tools, and any machinery requiring efficient conversion of rotational to linear movement. Pre-drilled mounting holes simplify installation to minimize downtime.

Low Maintenance for Extended Lifespan

The Atlanta Rack requires minimal maintenance, with simple lubrication recommended to ensure optimal performance. Its polished, smooth surface reduces wear, while high corrosion resistance further extends service life even under fluctuating temperatures from -20C to 120C.

FAQs of Atlanta Rack:

Q: How is the Atlanta Rack installed in machinery?

A: The Atlanta Rack is equipped with pre-drilled mounting holes, allowing for easy and secure installation. Standard fasteners are used to fix the rack to the machine, assisting quick integration into automation systems or machine tools.

Q: What applications are best suited for the Atlanta Rack?

A: This rack is primarily used in industrial automation and machine tools, where precise linear motion is required. Its ideal for converting rotational movement from pinions to accurate linear movement in cutting, positioning, or assembly equipment.

Q: When should I consider using a custom size Atlanta Rack?

A: Custom sizes are recommended when your application requires a specific module, length, or unique mounting configuration not covered by standard offerings. Simply contact your supplier or distributor to discuss custom fabrication based on your machinerys specifications.

Q: Where does the Atlanta Rack offer maximum operational benefit?

A: The Atlanta Rack excels in environments that demand high precision, smooth motion, and strong load-bearing capabilities. Its high corrosion and temperature resistance make it suitable for harsh industrial settings and manufacturing lines.

Q: What process ensures the racks high precision and low backlash?

A: The Atlanta Rack is manufactured via precision grinding and gear cutting to DIN 7 standards. This process ensures accurate tooth profiles, maintaining a backlash of less than 0.03 mm and a tight tolerance of 0.02 mm for consistent operation.

Q: How should the Atlanta Rack be maintained for optimal lifespan?

A: Maintenance is straightforward and low, with periodic lubrication recommended to reduce friction and wear. The anti-rust coating and polished surface further decrease maintenance frequency by resisting corrosion and contamination.

Q: What are the key benefits of choosing the Atlanta Rack for my system?

A: Key benefits include high precision, durability, resistance to corrosion and temperature extremes, low maintenance needs, and easy installation. These attributes make the Atlanta Rack a superior choice for demanding linear motion applications in industrial settings.
